Since the V3.1 firmware update, we’ve introduced the flexible canvas with high customizability into our Notes app. However, some users may find it challenging to use the canvas. Some changes in the settings can make the notes and content “move” to other places.

But, don’t worry. This article will walk you through the settings and working principles of the custom canvas. We’ll help you find the best use of this versatile feature. Let’s dive in.

Here’re the key insights:

Two Significant Settings of Flexible Canvas: Canvas Editor and Zoom

Before we get to know how to merge the custom canvas into your workflow, let’s begin with the two most significant canvas settings: the canvas scale and the Zoom feature.

Many users assume that canvas only has one setting, the canvas scale. The canvas scale is available in 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, 2x2 and custom. And the “Canvas Adjustment” can automatically cut the redundant blank parts.

Other than canvas scale, another essential element for using canvas smoothly is the Zoom feature.

By tapping the Zoom button, you can zoom the canvas in and out, enable pinch-to-zoom to adjust the canvas with fingers, and fit the screen or canvas.

These two buttons play different roles in using the flexible canvas in Notes. Let’s check the example below to get a grasp of when and how to use them.

Use Canvas Editor and Zoom in Different Situations

Canvas Editor and Zoom play different roles in canvas settings.

You can use Zoom anytime to modify the canvas size while maintaining its ratio. But you can adjust the canvas ratio in the Canvas Editor only when the canvas orientation is the same as the device direction.

Why Is It Important to Use Canvas Scale and Zoom Correctly?

It is important to correctly use Canvas Editor and Zoom because it can help you avoid a “content displacement” disaster.

After updating the latest firmware, some users found the content would sometimes move to other places when they used the flexible canvas in the Notes. Chances are they accidentally made the wrong settings to change the canvas size.

For instance, you’re using a vertical canvas in the horizontal mode. And you tap the canvas scale to try to change the canvas size. In this way, you’re trying to fit the vertical canvas into a landscape orientation.

So two things will happen:

  • Some content is cropped.
  • The flexible templates will change their size and scale based on the canvas.

If you apply the changeable template settings, such as the “Scaling” or “Stretch to Cover All,” the template lines and grids will change their places to execute the settings. In this case, the texts and content will display like they are not in the “right place.”

But if you can correctly use the Canvas Scale and Zoom, then you can avoid accidentally messing up your notes.

Conclusion

When using the flexible canvas, you can use the following tips to better create your notes and work:

💡Always determine the canvas orientation (horizontal or vertical) and ratio (1x1, 1x2, 2x1 or custom) at first.

💡 Then apply the template (landscape or portrait) accordingly.

💡Use Zoom anytime to zoom the canvas in and out without changing its ratio.

💡If you really need to change the canvas ratio, do it only when the canvas orientation is the same as the device direction (horizontal or vertical.)

💡If you’re worried about the accidental change of the canvas layout, you can also apply “Original Size” in the template settings. In this way, the template size will be fixed and will not change with the canvas.
