Reached the end of your eReader? Ready to upgrade? You’ve got more choice than ever when it comes to picking a new eReader. Before that, you are supposed to know more about E-ink screens.

If you are a big fan of Boox, when you unbox your Boox Note Pro, you may find that the screen of it is different from Boox Note’s. Note Pro features a glass-based screen that looks impact. But actually how many types of E-ink screens are there? Let’s find it out and see which one meet your needs the most.

1. E-ink Operating Principle

First of all, we have to know how E-ink works on screen. E-ink is actually a straightforward fusion of chemistry, physics and electronics. It’s so much like paper, it utilizes the same pigments used in the printing industry today.

The two pigment electronic ink system is made up of millions of tiny microcapsules, each about the diameter of a human hair. Each microcapsule contains negatively charged white particles and positively charged black particles suspended in a clear fluid. When a positive or negative electric field is applied, corresponding particles move to the top of the microcapsule where they become visible to the viewer. This makes the surface appear white or black at that spot.

2. E-ink Carta

E-ink Carta is an E-ink plastic film can be applied onto virtually any surface. Ultimately electronic ink will permit most any surface to become a display, bringing information out of the confines of traditional devices and into the world around us.

E-ink Carta delivers a dramatic 50% increase in contrast over earlier generations, giving displays a contrast ratio close to that of a paperback book. The crisp text and detailed graphics are also highly readable in direct sunlight. Carta’s 16 levels of grey produce the sharpest rendering of images with smooth tones and rich detail.

3. Screens

For all series of Boox eReaders, there are three main utilized E-ink displays — Mobius, glass-base and Acrylic screen.

(1) Mobius Screen

Weight: ★★★★★

Firmness: ★★★★☆

Paperlike: ★★★★★

Glare-free: ★★★★★

Appearance: ★★☆☆☆

Transparency: ★★★★★

Models: Poke Pro, Nova, Note, Max2, Max2 Pro

E-ink Mobius is an E-paper technology applied on several Boox models. The display has several benefits outside of the flexibility of the display itself. The thin film transistors allow the end product to be substantially lighter and thinner than products using glass base. This is particularly important for E-ink products requiring larger display areas. In addition, glass-based displays can be fragile easily; use of plastic-based TFTs can result in a more rugged end product with less breakage in the electronics due to drops or stress tension. However, a coin has two sides. the Mobius screen has another “fragile” issue, it would be scratched by sharp things. Your stylus tip may be one of the potential factors to scratch the screens. Therefore, a soft stylus tip is requisite to get over it.

On the other hand, for those users who demand an authentic paperlike writing feeling, this screen is a perfect choice. Unlike the smooth glass-based screen lacking any kind of resistance, the Mobius screen has certain friction that users are able to get the same level as precision and control as on a sheet of paper. The Boox models with Mobius display are ready to ignite a love of sketching and writing.

(2) Glass-based Screen

Weight: ★★☆☆☆

Firmness: ★★★☆☆

Paperlike: ★★★☆☆

Glare-free: ★★★☆☆

Appearance: ★★★★★

Transparency: ★★★★☆

Models: Nova Pro, Note Pro

Glass-based Screen of Note Pro

The glass-based screen has a remarkable improvement in viewing and reading experience. The latest Boox models Note Pro and Nova Pro adopt this screen cover on a Mobius display. Glass-based screens are scratch-resistant so do not have to worry about how hard your stylus is. Moreover, many users argue that they do not like the screen lower than the bezel, which may easily cause bad touch feeling, or hair caught under the bezel. It seems difficult to scribble at corners or sides with bezels. So, the flush glass-base screen is a great solution.

(3) PMMA (Acrylic) Screen

Weight: ★★★☆☆

Firmness: ★★★★★

Paperlike: ★★★★☆

Glare-free: ★★★★☆

Appearance: ★★★☆☆

Transparency: ★★☆☆☆

Models: Note Plus

Electronics with PMMA Screen

PMMA display, which is considered a significant alternative to glass as it lends its properties to a variety of uses in the electronics industry, is an awesome balance between Mobius and glass base. It is made of Acrylic. There are considerable tags on it — light, scratch-resistant, not crispy as glass, has a flush screen with bezel. Although PMMA display has a great number of pros, it’s not perfect — compared to other displays, it is a little less transparent.

The device screen is one of the most vital factors that decide which model fits your needs. Besides that, the screen size, price should be carefully considered also.
